Hampshire History is fun

When the Saxons arrived, west Hampshire became the center of the Kingdom of Wessex and several Saxon kings are buried in Winchester. A statue in Winchester salutes the mighty and powerful King Alfred, who brought stability to this region in the 9th century.

Norman rule in the county was appoved by the Norman kings, who created the New Forest as a hunting forest. The county was recorded in the Domesday Book, which divided it in 44 hundreds. After leaving the 12th century the ports grew in importance, most fueled by trade in the continent. Wool and cloth production in the county, was built to companies fishing and shipbuilding industry.

A series of fortresses and castles were built along the coast of the Solent to defend the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth for several centuries.

In particular, Southampton and Portsmouth were important ports, especially when some of their arch rivals, such as Bristol and Poole dropped as they were, together with the few places that had two shelters with deep water. Southampton was more important, as it had been host to many of the popular boats that included Mayflawer and Titanic, the latter had most of the staff of the natives of Southampton.

Hampshire played a role important during the Second World War, due to its large Royal Navy port in Portsmouth. The military camp at Aldershot and militarys Netley Hospital located in Southampton Water, along with its proximity to military training camps on Salisbury Plain and the Isle of Purbeck.

Supermarine, the Spitfire architectes and many other military aircraft, were all based in Southampton, which led to severe bombing during the war. Aldershot remains one of the main areas of British Armys durable. Farnborough is the mainstay of the Royal Air Force.

While many agencies still see Hampshire and the Isle of Wight collectively.

The towns of Bournemouth and Christchurch also fall into the old county Hampshire and traditional. These were delivered to Dorset, the local government reorganization in 1974.

Cities of Portsmouth and Winchester provide the highest jobs in the county and what attracted travelers to the cities. However, the gains from Southampton with largest number of jobs they offer and the floating population became very high.

Traditionally, rural areas dependent on agriculture Hampshire, though, the county is less reliable in agriculture more than most of the counties that surround it and that most people focus on dairy farming. The real value of agriculture as an employer, employee and Manufacturer of wealth has declined since the early 20th century and agriculture currently employs 1.32% of the total population.
